Omissions in the use of Adjectives

Ommision In The Use of Adjective: Adjectives are words that describe nouns or pronouns. 

A) Enough goes before nouns. Example: 

  • There are chairs for everybody to sit down. (Incorrect)
  • There are enough chairs for everybody to sit down. (Correct)
  • There isn’t information in this report; I need more details. (Incorrect)
  • There isn’t enough information in this report; I need more details. (Correct)
  • B) We only use how much and how many before nouns.

  • I can’t believe stubborn he is. (Incorrect)
  • I can’t believe how stubborn he is. (Correct)
  • C) The comparative Adjectives superior inferior, senior, junior, prior, anterior, posterior prefer, etc., should be followed by ‘to’ instead of ‘than’.

  • Example: He is senior me. (Incorrect) 
  • He is senior to me. (Correct)
  • D) When two adjectives qualify the same noun, both the adjectives should be expressed in the same degree. 

  • Example:  Mehak is both cleverer and intelligent than her sister. (Incorrect) 
  • Mehak is both cleverer and more intelligent than her sister. (Correct) 
  • E) No comparison is implied in the sentences where there is ‘times’ used for comparison. So positive degree or first degree of comparison is used.

  • Example:  My book is three times cheap as yours . (Incorrect)
  • My book is three times as cheap as yours.  (Correct)
  • F) Adjectives like ‘unique’, ideal,perfect, complete, universal, entire, extreme, chief, full square and round, which do not admit different degrees of comparison should not be compared.

  • Example: It is the most unique thing. (Incorrect) 
  • It is a unique thing.
  • G)  When two quantities of a noun or pronoun are compared with each other,  comparative form (more + positive degree) is used only, not ‘er’ comparative form.

  • Example: Hema is wiser than beautiful.  (Incorrect)
  • Hema is more wise than beautiful. (Correct)
